Dutch Oven
Every Thursday, there is a special ranger program - Dutch Oven Cooking. The Park Ranger first guided the kids to make pizza and cobbler from scratch. After 30 minutes or so, everyone had a nice snack. What a 4th July treat!
A Dutch oven is a thick-walled (usually cast iron) cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid. Dutch ovens have been used as cooking vessels for hundreds of years. They are called “casserole dishes” in English speaking countries other than the USA, and cocottes in French, They are similar to both the Japanese tetsunabe and the Sač, a traditional Balkan cast-iron oven, and are related to the South African Potjie and the Australian Bedourie oven.
Evening at Blue Heron
You can bet Lafayette brought along some brie to share with Gen. George Washington during the American Revolution. Hence, it may be hard to to find a more steeped-in-tradition July 4 event than this one, held at a French Cheese company. The day features fireworks, barbecue, and music. The event is free, BBQ is $5, parking is also $5. 5pm 2001 Blue Heron Dr. 800-275-0639. --Oregon Coast Today
